THE STRUGGLE IS REAL | Mental Health Training for Employees

“Employers are directed to develop appropriate policies and programs on mental health in the workplace designed to raise awareness on mental health issues, correct the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health conditions, identify and provide support for individuals at risk, and facilitate access to individuals with mental health conditions to treatment and psychosocial support,” a direction and explanation of the Chief Labor and Employment Officer of the Bureau of Working Conditions Dr. Ma. Imelda S. Santos regarding Mental Health Programs for Employees. (DOLE, 2019)

Mental health disorders are defined by the World Health Organization as a “broad range of problems with different symptoms,” generally characterized by “some combination of abnormal thoughts, emotions, behavior, and relationships with others.” (WHO, 2019)

In the Philippines, based on the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, mental disability ranks as the third disability in the country, with an estimated 88 people suffering for every 100,000 Filipinos (DOH, 2018) Moreover, recent data shows that there are almost 3.2 cases of suicide for every 100,000 Filipinos as a result of depression.
